Car plug-in converter/adapter?

I have one of those car plug-ins that you plug into your cigarette lighter and it allows you to plug an AC plug into it. I've used it plenty of times and it's always worked fine.

However, I plugged it in yesterday after not using it for several months, and within 5 seconds it started smoking from within the adapter, not the car. And the smell of the smoke wasn't the smell of fire. It was like some sort of exhaust coming from inside the adapter. I breathed it in without realizing it and the smell was awful and after almost 14 hrs, I can still smell that smell, and I think it's making me sick.

Does anyone know what exactly would have caused that type of exhaust? And what exactly did I inhale?
